Description

This one-hour didactic session will provide attendees with an understanding of current clinical recommendations for the initiation of buprenorphine for opioid use disorder, including low dose initiation and injectable formulations. Content will cover common challenges and solutions to address each.

Ethan Cowan,MD
Ethan Cowan, MD is Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Director for Research and Community Engagement for the Emergency Department at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. He has done significant investigative work on strategies to expand Emergency Department (ED) based HIV and HCV testing, to expand to ED based initiation of buprenorphine, HIV post and pre-exposure prophylaxis, to improve linkages to HIV, HCV and substance use treatment. He has also done significant work in clinical and research ethics. Dr. Cowan is a practicing emergency medicine physician in the Emergency Department of Mount Sinai Beth Israel, work which includes the management of persons who present to the ED with Opioid Use Disorder and overdose.

  • Identify best practices for buprenorphine initiation among an adult patient population in the primary care setting.
  • List common barriers to buprenorphine initiation and identify solutions to those barriers.
